  • The number of Gamma women in America – those who influence a wide network of consumers and generate and disseminate new ideas and trends – is estimated at 55 million and growing, according to a report (pdf) from Meredith Corporation. As the social and technological environment becomes more suited to their communication styles, their influence in the marketplace will give rise to a new marketing model, the report suggests. Gamma women stand in direct contrast to “Alpha” women, who value status and express their high standing on the social ladder through clothes, homes, cars, careers and families, the report states.

  • Economists may debate when the economy officially enters a recession, but Americans have been living in a “Recession Culture” for months, with significant impact on all major lifestyle indicators, according to a survey by Faith Popcorn’s BrainReserve. “Out on the street no one is asking if we are in a recession, they’re asking when will it all end and where will we be,” said Faith Popcorn, whose BrainReserve tracks 17 trends comprising Faith Popcorn’s TrendBank.

  • Although readers keep shifting to the Internet, Esquire magazine’s editor is sure print isn’t dying, and he aims to prove it Monday by unveiling a 75th-anniversary issue with a cover that features electronic ink. “For the last couple of years I’ve been in search of ways to do something that shows that print is a particularly vital product,” said Esquire magazine’s editor-in-chief, David Granger. “I really do think that print is the most exciting and rewarding medium there is.” A 10-square-inch display on the cover of Esquire’s October 2008 anniversary issue flashes the theme “The 21st Century Begins Now” with a collage of illuminated images. On the inside cover, a two-page spread advertising the new Ford Flex Crossover features a second 10-square-inch display with shifting colors to illustrate the car in motion at night.   • Chris Brogan has compiled a free ebook on personal branding called Personal Branding for the Business Professional (pdf format). It runs just about 15 pages (including the cover) and contains everything from strategy advice to some considerations to over 100 tactics and ideas on what to do next. Most of the ideas come from previous blog posts, but as there have been several new subscribers in the last several months, and because I believe that the information might spread further in an ebook format, I wanted to give it to you free, and without any sign up or anything.
